Preventative
Health Care and Vaccination Programs for Dogs
- Examination:
All new animals must be examined soon after acquisition, thereafter
annually.
- Distemper
(DHLPP-6 in 1) Vaccination: Protects against the basic major
diseases which can be life-threatening including Distemper,
Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Adeno Virus 2, and
Parvo.
- Rabies:
A fatal nervous system virus which can be transmitted to humans
through an animal bite. The law requires that this vaccination
be given between 3 and 6 months of age before a license is issued.
- Corona:
A virus that causes severe bloody diarrhea that is similar to
Parvo.
- Bordetella:
An infectious organism that causes a
severe cough in both dogs and puppies.
- Lyme:
A bacterial disease spread by ticks affecting both humans and
animals.
- Fecal:
A test for internal parasites (worms).
Many puppies are born with them and adult dogs acquire
them. You will infrequently see them in the stool.
- Heartworm:
A
disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Puppies and dogs develop
worms that live in their hearts. An annual test and preventative
medication is recommended, namely, the once a month Heartguard
or Interceptor.

- Feeding:
Feed three times per day until 6 months of age, then
twice per day until 1 year of age. At one year, change
over to adult food. For puppies we recommend Iams,
Science Diet, Eukanuba. Do not give puppies milk or liver because
they will cause diarrhea.
- Vitamins:
We recommend Pet Tabs, Pet-Tinic, etc.
- Teeth:
Dental hygiene is important to your pets health. Weekly brushing
with a pet toothbrush is recommended. Do not use human toothpaste;
pet toothpaste is available.
- Ears:
Clean about once or twice weekly or as needed. Ask us
for ADL Ear Cleaner, Oticlens, or Pan-Otic.
- Nails:
Trim as needed, usually every 4 to 6 weeks for most dogs.
- Fleas:
Flea Sprays, Powder, Collars, Shampoos, Dips and Flea Combs
can be used. Ask about Program (once a month pill), Advantage
(once a month topical treatment), and Frontline (once a month
topical treatment).
