PET STORY OF THE MONTH

Emerson Animal Hospital

Preventative Health Care and
Vaccination Programs for Cats

  • Distemper (3 in 1) Vaccination: A three in one vaccination (distemper, Calici virus and Rhinotracheitis) that protects your cat from serious and sometimes life threatening illness. All cats should be vaccinated against these diseases even ones that never go outside.
  • Rabies Vaccination: A fatal nervous system virus which can be transmitted to humans through an animal bite. It is strongly recommended that ALL CATS, including cats that never go outside, be vaccinated. A rabies vaccination is given at 4 months of age or older.
  • Feline Leukemia Vaccination: A severe, usually fatal disease that is contagious to other cats.
  • Feline Infectious Peritonitis Vaccination: A life threatening illness that is infectious to other cats. A simple intra-nasal vaccine helps prevent this illness.
  • Feline Leukemia Virus Testing & Feline Immuno-Deficiency Virus (also called Feline Aids) Testings: FeLV/FIV Test is recommended for all cats.
  • Fecal: A test on the stool for internal parasites (worms). Many kittens are born with worms and adult cats can acquire them. You will infrequently see them in the feces.
  • Heartworm: A disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Kittens and cats develop blood worms that live in their hearts. A new monthly chewable tablet "Feline Heartguard" is available for the prevention of heartworm in your cat.
  • Feeding: Science Diet, Adult Maintenance, Low Ash, Hills C/D Prescription Diet, etc.
  • Vitamins: Favor, Felovite, Pet-Tinic, etc.
  • Ears: Clean about once or twice weekly or as needed. Ask us for ADL ear cleaner, Oticlens or Pan-Otic.
  • Fleas: Flea powder, flea spray, flea collar, flea comb, Program (once a month pill), Advantage (once a month topical treatment), and Frontline (once a month topical treatment).
  • Teeth: Dental hygiene is important to your cat's health. Weekly brushing with a pet toothbrush is recommended. Do not use human toothpaste; pet toothpaste is available. Always get your cats teeth checked on a regular basis.
  • Neutering (Spay/Alter): Recommended at 6 months of age. We can put a reminder in the computer to let you know when your kitten is old enough.
